Conrad R. Clary, 76, Highland, KS

Conrad R. Clary, 76, of rural Highland, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, February 10, 2013, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

Conrad Ray Clary was born August 21, 1936 to Charles William and Matie Ellen Clary in the country outside of Troy, Kansas. He attended public schools at Troy Elementary, and graduated from Highland High School in 1954. Conrad continued his education at Highland Community College and the Emporia Teacher's College, also later obtained a Masters and Specialist degree in Education at Northwest Missouri State University. To help pay for his college education he served in the Army National Guard from 1954- 1963. On December 31, 1957, Conrad married his high school and lifetime sweetheart, Shirley Ann Cairo. Out of this union four children were born Gordon (Joy), Grant, Lori (Stan), and Gregg ( Michelle), eight grandchildren, Brant (Dana) Clary, Travis (Amanda) Clary, Justin (Kelsey) Clary, Judah Clary, Brielle Clary, Colt Glidden (Danelle), Mackenzie King, and Maddox Clary; and four great-grandchildren, Jaelynn, Tabin, Jozee and Aniston Clary; his sister Annie (Phil) Korthanke of Hiawatha.

Conrad began his elementary teaching career in Leavenworth, KS in 1956 to 1963. In 1963 to 1975 he taught grades first through eighth and was the principal at Midway-Denton. He moved over to Highland Elementary as the Elementary School Principal for 27 years until he retired in 2002.

After retirement Conrad continued to be active in the community, working with horses, had a love for books, family, story telling and church. Conrad was a member of the Highland Christian Church where he served as an elder.

Conrad was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Shirley.

A Celebration of Conrad's life is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday, February 14, at the Highland Christian Church, with Pastor Scott Fitch officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery, with flag folding ceremony.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after 12 noon Wednesday where the family will meet from 6 until 8 that evening.
