Linda Gene Brewer, 88, of Lincoln, NE

Linda Gene Brewer, 88, of Lincoln, NE (formerly of Rural Nemaha and Falls City, NE), passed away June 11, 2010 at Lincoln.

She was born February 8, 1922 at Crosbyton, TX  to Roy and Teresa (Obets) Kornegay.

After moving to the family farm in Gause, TX in 1934, she graduated from Hearne, TX High School in 1940. After graduation, she worked in the National Youth Administration for 14 months and then in the Engineering Department at Duncan Field, now Kelly Air Force Base at San Antonio. She enlisted in the U. S. Navy W.A.V.E.S. (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) March 19, 1943 at Houston and wnt to boot camp at Hunter College, NY. She graduated from Naval Air Technical Training Center at Memphis, TN as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate Third Class. She was stationed at Paso, WA and Norman, OK where she was among the first women to be advanced to Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class. She was discharged at Memphis on November 8, 1945.

Linda married Harlan B. Brewer on December 15, 1945 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Orange, TX, he passed away November 26, 1985, after which time the couple established their home in Humboldt, NE. In 1951 they moved to the Prairie Union Community near Shubert and lived there until 1980 when they moved into Falls City after retiring from farming.

Linda was a member of Harvey Mann American Legion Post at Humboldt. Harlan and Linda were the first husband and wife Permanent Lifetime members of the Nebraska American Legion.

Linda is survived by her son, Ted Brewer and wife Karen of Emerson, IA, daughters, Bonnie Brewer and husband Jeffrey Johnston of Elmwood, Judy Schlosser and husband Joe of Shubert, grandchildren, Nick and Amanda Brewer of Elmwood, step-grandchildren, James Skalberg and wife Kelli of Cullman, AL, Marcus Johnston and wife Isobel of Cincinnati, OH, step-great-grandchildren, Jamie Lyn and Spring Skalbeg, Asher Johnston, brother, Bill Kornegay of Garland, TX, sisters, Elizabeth Weagraff of Townville, PA, Merle Sheridan of Austin, Patricia Kornegay of San Antonio, Annie Goetz of Dallas, sister-in-law, Erma Brewer of Auburn, NE as well as many nieces and nephews. Linda is also survived by the loving and caring staff at Independence House Mandarin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers, Will Rogers, Charles, Dick and Kenneth, twin sisters, Dessie and Tessie and her sister, Floreine.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home with Pastor Debra Pepperl officiating. Interment will be in Humboldt Cemetery. Military graveside honors by Harvey Mann American Legion Post Honor Guard.

Open visitation will begin on Sunday afternoon at Dorr and Clark Funeral Home.
