Chiefs Release Matt Cassel

(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) During Alex Smith's press conference Wednesday, Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey said Matt Cassel was still on the roster. Now, the 2012 opening day starter is looking for a new home.

The Chiefs announced today they have released the quarterback.

Cassel's time in Kansas City appeared to be short after the acquisitions of Smith and backup quarterback Chase Daniel. The team attempted to trade him before releasing him, but it proved difficult given his contract. His departure frees up about $6 million worth of cap room.

Cassel was brought over from New England by former general manager Scott Pioli as a part of that new Chiefs regime in 2009. His high point came in the 2010 as he led Kansas City to the AFC West Championship and made the Pro Bowl, throwing 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

He threw for just six touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2012 as he split time with Brady Quinn after both quarterbacks suffered concussions.
