St. Joseph kids take a big step toward back to school. Kids got a leg up today from AFL-CIO Community Services` Clothes Closet. The organization handed out more than 300 pair of shoes to school-age children as part of its "Soles for Christ" program. Churches throughout St. Joseph have been collecting new shoes for the program. One St. Joseph mother of three says it helps her with necessities. "We just came down here because we don`t have the money to buy shoes, so this does it," Penny Kerns, mother of three, says. "Peer pressure is really in the higher grades. Some kids are coming in with holey shoes or less. Kids stay stuff to them, so being able to give them a pair of new shoes is great," Linda Hale, AFL-CIO system administrator, says. The AFL-CIO still has about 300 pair of shoes left, but its having a hard time filling requests for larger sizes. The Clothes Closet needs new shoes sized 8 1/2 to 13. Call them at 816-364-1131 for information.
