Swinging for Kids in Need

Updated: January 7, 2009
Sixteen baseball teams swing for kids in need at Hyde Park. The Southside Baseball Association hosts its second annual benefit for children who can`t participate in sports because of health conditions. Concession stand profits, plus a nearly $200 entry fee per team will be donated to two St. Joseph families. The association board chose to help both eight year-old Braneshia Shipley and 13 year-old Brianna Dube. Dube will undergo open heart surgery and Shipley has a brain condition that prohibits her from walking and talking. "If I understood her mother correctly they weren`t expecting her to live past her 1st birthday but she`s eight years old now and she`s confined to a wheel chair. l tell you I haven`t seen two families more happy to see something like this going on." Today`s tournament wasn`t about winning or losing. Instead of trophies for the winners. The association gave out event T-shirts to every player.
