New Life at Historical Atchison County Cemetery

Updated: January 7, 2009
Several Civil War heros, an indian princess, and some of Atchison County`s first residents are resting at the Forest Grove Cemetery. One of the oldest cemeterys in Atchison, Kansas is now getting a much-needed makeover. Neighbors say it nearly crumbled into nothing. No one was in charge of Forest Grove Cemetary for years. Neighbors say brush, trees and mother nature nearly destroyed the historical site. The Atchison County Geneological Society re-dedicated the cemetery this weekend after two years of renovations. Neighbors volunteered their own time and equipment to uproot trees and cement headstones. Trying to make the fallen final resting place peaceful again. An anonymous donor provided flowers for all of the graves and American flags for the war veterans.
