Address Numbers Should be Big and Clear for Safety`s Sake

Updated: January 7, 2009
When emergency services are needed, it`s critical that first responders can find your house quickly and easily. The American Red Cross recommends big, clear numbers for the front of your home. In fact, a St. Joseph city ordinance requires that your address numbers follow specific guidelines. "It`s important that the numbers be reflective in the background, that they be at least four inches in height, and that they`re put on the house really where they`e very visible from the street, at night, anytime," Karla Long, emergency services director for the Midland Empire chapter of the American Red Cross, says. Throughout the month, Red Cross volunteers will install house numbers to those in need free of charge. Call the Red Cross at 816-232-8439 for more information.
