Robert (Bob) Lee Simmons, 86, Highland, KS

Bob was born August 15, 1926 in White Cloud, Ks, the son of Robert E. and Cecil (Gibson) Simmons. He grew up in the Doniphan County area where he attended country school and helped on the family farm. He was U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Bob was the manager of The Twombly Grain Elevator in Highland for many years until he began working as custodian/bus driver for Highland Grade School where he thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the children. Any spare time he had was spent on the river bank catching cat fish. Bob also did volunteer work for the Lions Club.
Bob married Kathryn Jo Smith September 2, 1949 at the Highland Baptist Church. They were married by Jo's father, Robert Smith who was the pastor there. She preceded him in death in September 1993.
Survivors include a son, Robert Daniel (Deena) Simmons of Highland; a daughter, Judy (Mike) Twombly, also of Highland; four grandsons, Josiah and Micah Simmons, Michael 'Tracy' (Mika) Twombly and Travis Twombly, one granddaughter, Deidra (Chad) Breazile; two great granddaughters Tori Breazile and Mari Twombly. Also surviving are two brothers: Bill of Troy, Kansas and David of Highland; three sisters: Judy Ross of Troy, KS, Luella Golden of Phoenix, AZ and Jerry Ruth Davis of San Antonio, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death are his parents, two brothers, Donald and Earl Simmons and two sisters Pauline Russell and Mary Liechti.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after 10 a.m. Thursday, where the family will meet from 6-8 that evening. A celebration of Bob's life is planned for at the First Baptist Church in Troy, Kansas at 10 AM Friday, March 22, with Pastor Jerry Boaz officiating, to be assisted by Sam Blythe. Burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery with military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.
