(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Patriotism and service to country are strong feeling for soldiers heading off toa battlefield.

Tuesday marked the tenth anniversary of the Iraq War.

Members of the Missouri Army National Guard reflected on their deployment overseas.

Col. Mark Hampton, now retired, was deployed in 2005.

He was stationed just sixty miles north of Baghdad.

After the events of 9/11, Hampton said it was not uncommon to see a lot of young soldiers in the ranks.

"During that time period in 2005, recruiting was still very, very strong here in the states and no doubt across the nation," said Hampton. "We deployed at 100 percent strength."

More than 1.5 million American soldiers and civilians served in the Iraq War.

Of those, more than 30,000 were wounded and another 4,500 killed.
