Louis E. Kiger, 89, St. Joseph, MO

Louis E. Kiger, 89, St. Joseph, Missouri died Monday, February 25, 2013 at home.

Lou was born September 3, 1923 in Rahway, New Jersey to Louis H. and Martha (Kollach) Kiger. He served in the 75th Division, 291st Infantry in the European Theater in World War II. He was severely wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to New Jersey to pursue his education through the G.I. Bill. He received both his Bachelors and Master's Degree in literature from Rutgers University.

Lou taught English at John Sweatt High School in Crockett, California for four years, was an English professor at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California for eleven years, and a union representative/labor negotiator for the California State Employees Association for seventeen years.

Lou loved Jesus Christ and was a lifelong Presbyterian. He was an ordained Elder and was actively involved at Community Presbyterian Church, Vallejo, California; First Presbyterian Church, Santa Ana, California; and First Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph, Missouri. Lou enjoyed his family and many friends, running, traveling, and acting in community theater. What we will remember most about Lou (Dad-Grandpa) was his love and support, and his extraordinary sense of humor and wit.

Lou was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Charles Kiger. He married Dorothy Adams in 1951. They divorced in the 1980's. He leaves behind two daughters, Marta Morrison, Santa Ana, California, and Krista Kiger, St. Joseph, Missouri; three grandchildren, Cameron Villegas (Sergio), Santa Ana, California, Taylor Morrison, Santa Ana California, and Sidney Kiger, St. Joseph, Missouri; brother, George Kiger, Vallejo, California; niece, Dottie Richards, and the six Kiger nephews: Bob, Jim, Rick, Bill, Charlie, and Ron, and many extended family and friends.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 1:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church with a reception following the service. Burial will be at a later date in Vallejo, California. In lieu of flowers, the Family suggests memorial gifts to New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Capital Building Fund, First Presbyterian Church Local Mission Fund, or Hands of Hope Hospice.
