But at the Atchison Senior Village they're trying to make it a little easier with the opening of a new special care room.
The room is possible thanks to the help of donations from the family of former resident Trudy Kidwell and others in the community. Her family proposed the idea of dedicating a room where a family can spend some private time together during final days.
"To be able to laugh and enjoy those last days and to be able to share photos and play games," says facility administrator Peggy House.
The room is dubbed "The Cardinal Room" because Trudy loved the birds so much. It is hoped the room will serve as a model to other nursing homes throughout the region.
