Betty Meredith was born in 1919 in Green, Kansas. She and her sister, Faye Schaff, moved to Faucett, Missouri, with their parents, Werner and Marie Habluetzel. She left their farm to come to the city of St. Joseph where she attended Benton High School. After graduating at 16, Betty went to work as a clerk at Beaty's Warehouse. That was where she met Jack Meredith, a young grocery store manager. They were married in 1940. While Jack was away in the Pacific during World War II, Betty continued to work while living at the Plaza Penthouse apartments with four other St. Joseph girlfriends. Her daughters, Susan and Debby were born after the war was over.
Betty's life was centered around her family, the First Christian Church, and Beaty's #39 grocery store on 19th and Jules where Jack was manager and she worked part time. She belonged to two bridge groups, Pyka and Semo, and also volunteered with Meals on Wheels. In 1955 she began a new activity, golf. She became involved in the Moila Women's Golf Association and not only scored two holes-in-one but successfully competed in many tournaments in St. Joseph, Maryville and Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister; and son-in-law, Rich Hays.
Survivors: daughter, Sue Carrel and husband Leo Gorenstein and daughter Debby Hays; nieces, Sharon Hawk and Laura Warner; nephews, Mike Schaff and Bob Hastings; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and the many people who considered her a second mom.
Services: 3:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The celebration of her life will be from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Meals on Wheels. The family would also like to thank the wonderful staff of Carriage Square Assisted Living, Carriage Square Full Care, and Hands of Hope Hospice for their love, compassion, and devotion.
