The Vatican confirms reports Pope Benedict XVI, age 85, is set to resign at the end of the month.
Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger's papacy began in 2005.
Pope Benedict said in a statement early Monday morning that at his age he lacks the strength to carry on duties.
A pope has not resigned from his position in nearly 600 years.
His resignation will lead to a conclave within the Vatican to select the Pope's successor.
That decision will likely come in March.
