(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) This week's hometown hero spends her days working at Benton High School, but her military roots run deep.

Jennifer Halter's husband is a member of Missouri's Air National Guard, where she volunteers with support groups at Rosecrans air National Guard Base.

And four years ago, she helped start the group Operation Support Military Kids in the St. Joseph School District.

It's a support group that identifies students who have family military members, and provides support for them.

It's Halter's strong family military ties that keeps her volunteering and offering regular support.

"My husband's in the guard, as is my brother-in-law. My brother just retired from Offutt Air Force Base after 20-plus years, and our daughter is in the guard. As of our immediate family, we have a lot in the guard," said Jennifer Halter.

The district's Operation Support Military Kids group has received several awards from the national organization Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
