"There's a lot of good things going on in Cameron that seldom get brought out," says the general manager of the Cameron Cooperative ag store. "People don't recognize the good things that happen here."
Wood was born and raised in Cameron. His store has been affiliated with the fuel company Cenex since 1999.
Cenex, based out of Minnesota, began a program called Tanks of Thanks in 2012, awarding free tanks of gas to deserving people in communities all across the Midwest.
"In year one, more than 2,600 people were rewarded with $132,000 in free fuel," says CHS Refined Fuels brand marketing manager Akhtar Hussain.
Roger Wood has nominated six people, and five have won - each receiving $50 in free fuel.
One winner is Al Broce, from Sweet Al's Donut Shoppe.
Broce is a long-time friend of Roger's.
"I like donuts so I got to know him really well right of the bat," Wood said. "We served on the fire department together and various things over the years. He's been a good friend. He's always done a lot of good things for the community he's donated a lot of donuts and cookies to various organizations and nursing homes and things like that. He supports the food pantry and the clothing and all that kind of stuff. He's a great guy."
All that, in Wood's opinion, makes Sweet Al the perfect candidate for a free tank of Cenex gas.
"Cenex really created the Tanks of Thanks program to drive home with consumers that Cenex locations are locally-owned and operated," Hussain said. "Customers of those stores are usually the friends and neighbors and family members and the people who are operating them. What better way to drive that point home than reward people with free fuel for doing good deeds in their communities?"
Wood hopes anyone who wins from his nominations might also nominate someone else - paying that thank you forward.
Nominations for the Tanks of Thanks program are not restricted to Cenex employees. Anyone can nominate someone they think is deserving by visiting the program's website.
