KU Takes Round 1 of the Sunflower Showdown

(MANHATTAN, Ks.) No. 3 Kansas beat in-state rival No. 11 Kansas State in a low-scoring battle 59-55 pushing the Jayhawks win streak to 16 games.
The win gives the Jayhawks (17-1, 5-0 Big 12) sole possession of first place in the conference.
The loss is just the first for the Wildcats (15-3, 4-1 Big 12) at Bramlage Coliseum this season.
In a game that the deficit never exceeded 10 points, Kansas State did not hold a lead after being ahead 19-18 with 6:25 left in the first half.
Kansas used a well-rounded scoring effort to remain ahead of the Jayhawks.
Senior Travis Releford led Kansas with 12 points, while Ben McLemore and Jeff Withey added 11.
The Wildcats were led by a career-high 19 points from Shane Southwell.
Point guard Angel Rodriguez scored 12 points, 11 in the first half, and dished 8 assists.
Kansas State is on the road Saturday against Iowa State, while Kansas hosts Oklahoma.
