Mary Alice Shannon, 87, Hamlin, KS

She was born on August 27, 1925 at Padonia, KS to Roy Madison Johnson and Jeanette Kezer and was a life long resident of the Hamlin area. She graduated from Hamlin High School in 1943. She was married to Forrest M. "Brownie" Shannon on April 9, 1944. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, landscape painting, reading, stamp collecting, and garage sales. She was very fond of shoes, hats, clothing, and jewelry. She loved to teach Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was a past President of the William Carey American Baptist Women's Association. She was an active member of the Hamlin Baptist Church. Even though she suffered a stroke in 2006, she continued to raise funds for the American Heart Association and other charities. She was employed by the Brown Co. Infirmary for a short time.
She is survived by two daughters, Rosemary E. Ward of Hamlin, KS, Rochelle (Bill) Lucero of Auburn, KS, and three sons, David M. (Phyllis) Shannon of Hamlin, KS, Forrest "Scott" (Marty) Shannon of Kansas City, MO, and Jonathan R. Shannon of Hamlin, KS. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. She will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Forrest, two brothers Roy and Byron Johnson, and four sisters, Hazel Schowengerdt, Jessie Snyder, Joyce Warren, and Esther Hospitalier.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., January 23, 2013 at the Hamlin Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Hamlin Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.
