Signs Going up For One-Room School Houses in Nodaway County

(MARYVILLE, Mo.) Early in the afternoon, you may find two women putting up some signs.
They are marking a spot for those in search of the past.
"Every little town had the beginning of schools," said Lorna From. "Some had three or four schools in town because there were more children located there."
From is just one of more than a dozen people across Nodaway County posting signs with school names on them.
It was an idea the group wanted to do for a few years now.
It was not until the calls for these signs began to increase that a group formed in January of 2012.
Since then, they have been posting signs and sharing stories with those who once studied in the the small schools.
"They just could all tell many tales about their experiences in school," said From. "They were excited because they wanted to preserve that memory."
At one point, there were at least nine one-room school houses in Maryville alone.
It is just a small portion of the more than 200 signs marking the history of early education in Nodaway County.
"Now we've reached 213," said From. "So they just kind of keep cropping up here and there. "We had to find people that lived close to those schools because that's why they remembered where they were. So we had a lot of people that knew all about it and wanted to share."
