John Francis Donaghy, 80, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at his home in Kansas City, MO.
A visitation will be held 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2013 at Rollins Funeral Home in Platte City, MO. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 19, at St. Therese Catholic Church in Kansas City, MO. Interment will follow in the Platte City Cemetery. The family suggests contributions be given to the Disabled American Veterans.
John was born May 6, 1932 in New York, NY to John and Catherine (Hartigan) Donaghy. He was a 1950 graduate of the Cardinal Hayes High School, and earned his master's degree from Cooper Union College, both in New York City. Over the years, John lived in the Sudbury, MA and Anaheim, CA areas, before moving to Kansas City. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of the St. Anthony Claret Catholic Church in Anaheim. John married Catherine Mary Mahon on July 11, 1959 in New York City. He worked as an electrical and aerospace engineer for MIT in Cambridge, MA, and TRW in Torrance, CA; and was a member of IEEE. John enjoyed being a volunteer for Irvine Park Nature Center in Orange, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Ann Donaghy; and brother Pat Donaghy. John is survived by: his wife Catherine, of the home; his daughter Carol Gates (William) of Platte City; 5 brothers Bill of San Diego, CA, Charles (Bettina) of IL, Joe of FL, Tom (Judy) of MI, and Jim Donaghy of New York City; 2 sisters Peggy Kelly of NY; and Mary Donaghy of New York City; and 6 grandchildren.
