(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) St. Joseph police have identified a body found in the debris of a garage fire Thursday morning.

The victim was identified as Richard Dean Travis, 53, of St. Joseph. Commander Jim Connors said that the official cause of death was smoke inhalation, but that the investigation would continue.

Travis' body was found by trash crews Thursday, Dec. 13, six days after a fire destroyed a garage at 2015 Union Street. The body was among the debris from the fire.

St. Joseph Fire Chief Mike Dalsing said there were no signs of anyone inside the garage when crews were called to the fire on December 7.

"I'm not making any excuses for the department," Dalsing said. "We take full responsibility for it. But it is just a situation where you would not expect anybody to be in there."

Neighbors reported seeing people around the garage recently.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the St. Joseph Police Department at 816-271-4777/
