(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) It was a warm welcome back for Red Cross volunteers returning from Hurricane Sandy's aftermath.
For one volunteer, he went back to help a place he once called home.
"A lot of people don't know it but those towns are linked together by common boardwalks," said Bill Caldwell. "A lot of those towns have recreation areas and amusement parks."
Born in Patterson, New Jersey, Bill Caldwell remembered the areas as it they once were.
His Garden State roots even touched some of those he helped.
"One woman we gave supplies to and she noticed that we had some candies in there and she started crying," said Caldwell. "She said she got those candies when she was a kid and she hasn't seen them in a long time. And I said you're going to get a whole bunch today."
For all the volunteers, it was a the hours were long as weeks went by assisting in the recovery.
The amount of volunteers paled in comparison to the gratitude of those affected.
"It's going to have to be summer before a lot of people are going to be back in their houses," said Bob Wayman.
