Buchanan County Catches Payroll Error

Several maintenance employees were accidentally awarded bonuses in their paychecks.
The nine employees were given $300 in their paychecks labeled as a bonus.
A state statute makes giving county employees a bonus illegal.
Instead of getting a bonus, the employees were supposed to receive a clothing allowance.
County commissioners say it was just an accident that is being corrected.
"This is money that was in their budget," said RT Turner, presiding commissioner for Buchanan County. "They actually lost an employee so they had a little surplus money and decided to do a clothing allowance and when it was turned in, it was coded wrong."
The county said the mistake should not put a burden on taxpayers.
