She was born May 10, 1907 near New Point, Missouri. Helen was a lifelong resident of Holt County, living in the Mound City community for over 70 years.
Helen graduated from New Point High School in 1925 and the Missouri Valley Commercial College in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1928. She worked for a short time for the former Stalcup & Smith Insurance Co. in Oregon, Missouri, before working for J.C. Whitmer, DDS in Oregon. On November 26, 1937, she started working for the USDA, where she worked for twenty-six years. She then worked for the Farmers Coal & Grain Co. in Maitland and for the former Exchange Bank in Mound City, before retiring in 1974.
On October 10, 1945, she married John H. Hatch in St. Joseph. He preceded her in death on February 25, 1991.
Mrs. Hatch was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mound City, charter member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary # 8406, member of the American Legion Auxiliary #121, fifty year member of the Past matron of the Order of the Easter Star, lifetime member of the Holt County Historical Society, and a lifetime charter member of the National WWII Memorial Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles & Caroline (Kramer) Kurtz; two brothers, Lloyd W. Kurtz, Amos E. Kurtz, C. Maurice Kurtz (Helen); two sisters, Ester L. Lunsford & Mary L. Carson; one niece, Carolyn Ingels; three nephews, Ronald Kurtz, Roland Carson, and Gerald Lunsford.
Survivors: four nieces, R. Darlene Wallen, Springfield, Missouri, Donna Nugent, Overland Park, Kansas, Marilyn Mitchell, Corning, Iowa, and Marsha Hill, Aloha, Oregon; three nephews, Charles Kurtz, Branson, Missouri, Roger Carson, Savannah, Missouri, and Dennis Kurtz, Encinatas, California.
Services: 1:00 P.M. Monday, Pettijohn & Crawford Funeral Home. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, Pettijohn & Crawford Funeral Home, where friends may call after 4:00 Sunday. The family suggests memorial gifts to Mound City Nutrition Site or Kendallwood Hospice of St. Joseph.
