(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The St. Joseph School District has confirmed a woman who died from injuries in a traffic accident Wednesday worked as a substitute teacher.

JoEllen Abbott, 40, was taken to the hospital after her van was struck by a truck on South 22nd Street in St. Joseph.

Police say the truck that hit Abbott's van was listed as stolen.

The driver of the truck, a juvenile, was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The other occupants of the truck were two juveniles and a 17-year-old. All three were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Two of the teens in the stolen truck, both 16 years old, are now in custody at the Buchanan County Juvenile Detention Center. Charges are pending.

The St. Joseph Police Department said an officer had passed the stolen truck a few moments before the crash, but police were not in pursuit of the vehicle. The officer reported that the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Comments

I heard the scanner and it seems the officer had turned around to find the truck in question and it had already ducked out of sight. AT A FAST PACE. HIGH RATE OF SPEED. He's a cop and was doing his best.
