Platte City first grader Alex Beeman recently took third place in the nation for a story she wrote and illustrated when she was in kindergarten.
Alex was one of 12 winners in the PBS Kids Go Writing contest.
The contest is designed to encourage kids to read in a fun and hands-on way.
Alex won for her story -- Fury the Cat has a Birthday Party.
Her mom says she's always loved to write.
Alex says the idea for the story came pretty easily.
"When I was in kindergarten, me and my friends came up with stories with cats doing things in the middle of the night and like cats being funny and stuff, " said Alex.
"I knew she loved writing," said Jennifer Beeman. "She always talked about how writing was her favorite thing to do in school, even during free time she wanted to do writing."
Alex won an Ipod for her story.
She says plans to enter the contest again next year and write a second story about Fury the Cat and Valentine's Day
