(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) It did not take long for Bill Puett to know that he wanted to do when he grew up.

"My uncle was a St. Joe police officer," said Bill Puett, a candidate for Buchanan County Sheriff. "At four years old, he brought a police car by, sat me in the front seat, gave me the radio. I thought I was talking to the chief."

Since that moment, he has been hooked on public service.

He has served on the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department for the last 25 years.

For the first time, he is in a political race, gunning for his boss's job.

If that was not enough, he also has a grandson on the way the day before election.

"It's exciting," Puett said. "Very energetic and very, very positive."

A positive attitude he has been having through the entire race, even facing off against fellow co-workers.

He is just hoping all his experience with the Sheriff's Department can make him a good leader.

"A lot of people want to hear, 'I, I, I'," Puett said. "It's not I, this is a team. I just want to have the opportunity to lead this group of hard working, dedicated people up here."

He is also hoping to let his first grandson get a chance to ride with him as a sheriff, giving him a similar experience Puett had when he was a young boy.

"I hope so," Puett said. "Absolutely. If he wants to crawl up there with me, absolutely."
