Safiya Songhai

Safiya Songhai joined the KQ2 team as a weekend anchor and general assignment reporter in February, 2012.This east coast native, has reported for WRNN-TV in Rye-Brook , New York for the Richard French Live Show. Both during and after college, she worked at WHUT-TV in Washington , DC , hosting PBS specials.
During her time in Washington , DC she was nominated for a local Emmy, and won the Student Emmy for a half hour program that she hosted and produced on an annual arts festival in Northwest D.C.
In Baltimore, MD she produced the Maryland Lottery which airs on WJZ-TV.
In 2005, she and a small camera crew produced the undercover footage for the Dateline NBC special on the BTK serial Killer, Dennis Rader.
Outside of journalism, Songhai is an award-winning filmmaker and has taught film and television production in the Texas A&M system.
Songhai holds an MFA in Film and Television production from New York University 's Tisch School of the Arts, and is a summa cum laude graduate of Howard University 's School of Communications, and attended Dartmouth College. She is a member of the National Associate of Black Journalists.
An avid traveler, Songhai has criss-crossed the Atlantic Ocean, with destinations such and Japan, Senegal, Morocco, The Dominican Republic and Barbados on her itinerary.
Even though she drinks three cups of coffee before each newscast she's no stranger to a yoga mat and a Sade album.
