(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Northwest Missouri State University saw record-breaking numbers at their 2012 Spring Commencement. More than 700 graduates received their degrees at a ceremony that took place in Bearcat Arena on the Maryville campus.

The new graduates also heard from Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, who encouraged students to make contributions to their communities.

Students say it's the education they received at Northwest that helped them get where they are today.

"I'm glad to have it done and I mean I'm proud to be a bearcat. I finally understand what it means- once a bearcat, always a bearcat," Jason Lawrence, NWMSU graduate said.

"It feels awesome, I know Northwest really helped me a lot and I'm looking forward to being out in the real world," Joseph Barbosa said.

The next stop for Barbosa is the St. Joseph School District, where he was recently hired as a new teacher for Central High School.
