Softball tournament raises seatbelt safety awareness

Kansas residents play ball for a cause at the second annual "Buckle Up for Mal" softball tournament. Two years ago, then 13-year-old Mallorie Adkins was killed in a car accident and she wasn`t wearing a seat belt. This year, her family has raised $4,000 to go toward the Malorie Adkins Scholarship Fund. Those scholarships are awarded to Wathena High School seniors who participate in the same activities that Malorie did -- athletics or band. The family hopes the tournament will raise more awareness about the affects of not wearing a seat belt. "A lot of it is seatbelt awareness and it`s just to get the message out there that if you were your seatbelt, it will safe your life basically. And if she would have been wearing hers, most likely, her injuries would have been minimal," Malorie`s sister Ashleigh Adkins says. The adkins family also promotes seatbelt safety by handing out key chains, giving speeches and participating in seatbelt safety week.
