Green Acres: Still Up For Grabs?

Updated: January 7, 2009
The fate of St. Joseph`s old Green Acres building is still up in the air Tuesday. Buchanan County Commissioners aren`t yet satisfied with a bid from developer Don Evans. The County had suggested Evans us TIF money, or Tax Increment Financing, to upgrade the building. Evans has stated he would rather use private funds to convert the old building into office space. During a closed door meeting Tuesday, Commissioners asked Evans to come back with a cost analysis, a project timeline and a list of expected occupants among other things. "I know there`s some at the county that would like to see the building torn down and that`s not been a secret. They`d like to see it torn down and another box store in its place. Those individuals would do whatever it takes to trip me up to where that`s not going to happen," said Evans. Presiding Commissioner Tom Mann says he`s still hopeful the deal will go through. He plans to meet with developers of the Shoppes at North Village to further discuss the contract.
