Trestman On Cutler 1/17/13

Lake Forest, Illinois-The main allure in Marc Trestman's hiring is his history on offense. Wherever Trestman goes, offenses and in particular quarterbacks, tend to get a lot better.

"The quarterback in this league has got to play at an efficient level. It's our job as coaches to get him to do that," says Trestman.

"He's always demonstrated excellence. That's a person I want to be in a room with. I want to be on his side," says Bears GM Phil Emery.

Quarterback has been a controversial position in Chicago ever since Jay Cutler arrived. Trestman worked with Cutler before his draft combine 8 years ago, so he knows what he's getting.

"He understands his strengths and his weaknesses and he wants to go forward," says Trestman. "I can't wait to get my hands on him."

Trestman is familiar with Cutler, having worked with him in the past, and he did have good things to say about Cutler as a quarterback. But when he was asked if Cutler was a franchise quarterback, he stopped short of saying yes or no.

"Jay Cutler is a guy who is willing to learn," says Trestman. "Jay Cutler in my very short time with him wants to do everything he can to help this franchise and please our amazing fans. And that's where we're going to start."

Trestman seemed to commit to analytics and adjustments more than a specific player or scheme, but he knows very well important his relationship is with his quarterback.

"The number one marriage in all of sports is the marriage between a quarterback and his coach. That's it," says Trestman. "It starts there. And then everything precedes from there."
