(Vatican City) White smoke poured from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel signaling the selection of the next pope Wednesday.
Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina - now known as Pope Francis - has been elected as the next leader of the Catholic church.
The announcement was made on the balcony of Saint Peter's Basilica.
"I announce to you a great Joy. We have a pope! The most eminent and the most reverent Lord Jorge cardinal of the holy Roman church Bergoglio who takes for himself the name of Francisco," said Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.
Pope Francis is the first South American pope.
A total of 115 cardinals made the decision after the 5th round of voting on the second day of the conclave.
Thousands of faithful are celebrating in St. Peter's Square and thousands more headed there.
