(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Buchanan County deputies are warning about a phone scam trying to get people's personal information.

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department said people are getting call claiming they have won a million dollar prize from Publisher's Clearing House.

The caller, according to Col. Bill Puett, then asks the "winner" to purchase a $500 cash card from Wal-Mart.

The sheriff's department said the scammers will call back several times to see if a person has purchased the card, even saying they will help senior citizens in order to get them their grand prize.

"We want to get this information out obviously so people know it's a scam," said Col. Bill Puett with the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department. "When you start using large names like Publisher's Clearing House and Wal-Mart, they try to add legitimacy to their scam."

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department reminds people not to give their personal information over the phone.

Reminds me of the scam call I received before. The caller told I won $1 million and all I needed to do to claim my prize was pay for the processing fee of $500. But as much as it would be nice to get that much money, I knew better and called the bluff. I also reported the call to CALLERCENTER to raise a warning.
