As a fitness specialist for Heartland Health, Sarah Srock helps those looking to live a healthier lifestyle.
And she's prepared to offer guidance for people in the new year, especially those just getting started.
"It's always best to start light if you've never done it before because there is so many different levels, and that can be getting on the treadmill and walking for ten minutes at a slow pace, just to get started," said Srock.
Experts recommend exercising at least three days a week for thirty minutes.
But for those looking to lose weight, just exercising won't cut it.
"Eating healthy and exercising goes hand in hand, so if you are trying to lose weight or just get more toned, you still have to eat healthy and exercise. You can't just eat whatever you want and expect it to fall off in the gym," said Srock.
Living a healthier lifestyle can take a while to adjust and see results, but the benefits of healthy living can be worth all the effort.
"We want to prevent people from having heart attacks or prevent people from having diabetes, so we want to offer products, services, tools and education that can help people not only change by weight loss, but also improve their health," said Teresa Watkins, Marketing and Communications at Heartland Hospital.
And one way Heartland offers health improvements is The Pound Plunge, a twelve week weight loss challenge in time for new year's resolutions.
"We just wanted to make sure the timing was right for the community, and more than 2,000 people normally take the challenge every year. It shows that right at the beginning of the year, people are wanting to do resolutions and just change their habits, and change their health for the better," said Watkins.
Starting healthy habits can be overwhelming, but, if taken step by step it can quickly become a lifestyle.
Heartland Health and KJO 105.5 are in their eighth year of hosting The Pound Plunge.
Remember, it's always recommended to consult with your doctor before beginning physical activity.
