(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) As the nation remembers those killed in the shooting rampage in Connecticut, a tribute is taking shape in St. Joseph to honor local victims of violent crime.

The Buchanan County Prosecutor's office has planned a ceremony at the Victim Memorial Tree in front of the courthouse.

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, families, friends and community members are invited to pay tribute to crime victims during the holiday season. The tree is located on north side of the courthouse and will be covered in lights.

The prosecuting attorney's office wants those impacted by violent crimes to know that they will not be forgotten.

"We just want everyone to know that it's not just a case to us," said Victim Advocate Morgan Hansen.  "We remember the families that have lost someone precious in their life.  And we want to take time out to remember them especially during the holiday season."

The ceremony is open to the public. It is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
