(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Thousands of groups around the country are working to make sure everyone has a merry Christmas this year.

Some of those organizations are making sure basic needs are met.

InterServ is hosting its senior Angel Tree program.

Sponsors have adopted around 60 seniors in St. Joseph, giving them items like food and cleaning supplies.

During the season, other groups in St. Joseph are helping with a canned food drive for InterServ.

InterServ says many have happy holidays just having the necessities.

"A lot of us take it for granted that we're going to have the food, that we'll go to the pantry and it will be there, but for some people, that's not the case, and they need a little extra help to make that happen. That's part of where InterServ comes in," says Laurie Piper, of InterServ.

InterServ adds that seniors and other needy families don't just need help during the holidays, but all year long.
