(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph is celebrating a milestone.

The hospital's ambulance service has turned 40 years old.

The emergency response trucks are out on the front lines, and are considered a vital part of keeping the community safe. The paramedics start assisting patients before they even reach the hospital.

Throughout the years, the call volume has increased. The hospital says it has come a long way in forty years.

"Changes have occurred and growth in the local area, and those people experiencing technological capabilities, and the number of people associated with running the ambulance has increased too," said Craig Dieringer, Director of Emergency Response.

Heartland started with two trucks on 24-hour shifts. Now,, the hospital has five trucks during the day and four at night, working 12-hour shifts.
