Missouri Lags Region in Economic Growth, Study Says

(COLUMBIA, Mo.) Missouri has one of the weakest economies in the Midwest, according to a study released Monday by Creighton University.
The state ranks eighth out of nine states studied by economist Ernie Goss, a researcher at the university.
Goss ranks states on a scale from zero to 100, taking into account a number of factors, including the region's important agricultural industry. Missouri scored 47.2 on the scale, below the region's average of 48.
"For 2012, job losses in Missouri's non-durable goods sector more than offset increases for durable goods producers in the state," Goss said. "Our recent surveys of supply managers in the state show a continuation of this trend with overall job growth likely to hover slightly below zero in the next three to six months."
Growth in the overall region remains neutral, Goss said, and confidence among stakeholders is also weighed down.
