Bearcats Drop First Two of the Season in Hawaii

(HONALULU, Hawaii) The tropical climate in Honalulu didn't help No. 10 Northwest relax in the Hawaii Classic this weekend.

The Bearcats dropped their first two games of the season, 59-50 to St. Edwards on Saturday before dropping a disappointing 68-66 decision to Harding Sunday.

On Saturday, the normally potent three-point shooting ability of Northwest (8-2) went cold as they shot just 18 percent with a 3-of-16 effort. The team shot 40 percent from the floor overall.

St. Edwards (7-6) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back as Northwest could close the gap to no fewer than five points.

Dillon Starzl led the Bearcats with 17 points.

Against Harding, Northwest trailed by as many as 14 in the first half. A surge in the final 20 minutes cut the lead to one.

Deangelo Hailey found himself at the free throw line with 2.6 seconds left with the Bearcats down by a pair. He missed the first attempt, then clanked the second one to give Northwest a chance to tie. Matt Wallace pulled down the rebound, but missed the go-ahead three-pointer.

Hailey led the Bearcats with 24 points. Starzl and Grant Cozad poured in 17 and 13, respectively.

The Bearcats never led in either game.

The team returns to Maryville for MIAA play as they host Central Missouri on Dec. 29th.
