(SAINT JOSEPH, Mo.) Just over eight hours after their head coach announced he would retire after the 2012 season, the Missouri Western men's basketball team slugged it out for 40 minutes on the opening night of MIAA play.

They fell just short, however, falling on their home floor to Truman State, 71-69.

The Bulldogs (3-3, 1-0) were paced in the first half by hot shooting beyond the arc, knocking down 8 of 19 from three-point range.

Western (4-3, 0-1), however, took a 25-21 lead in the first half, but fell behind by one possession for a 36-34 deficit heading into the locker room.

After taking another six-point advantage, the Griffons allowed Truman to rattle off a 12-3 run to gain a lead they would cling to at the finish line.

Cedric Clinkscales lead Western with a double-double, pouring in 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
