Benton Baseball Takes State

By: Andrew Topps
Updated: June 2, 2007
Its been a long, wet, and emotionally draining weekend for Benton baseball. To win state, the Cards would have to win two games in one day. The journey began with Westminster. In Springfield the Cards scored 6 in the bottom of the fourth inning. To take the 12-5 victory, becoming the first St. Joseph team in history to play for a state baseball title. The Cards would have to get by a well rested Sullivan team. Sophomore Jake Kretzer played with a strained hamstring, but gutted it out. In the 6th inning Kretzer hits a homer to left center to make it a 2-0 game, and that is all they need. Benton is home to st. Josephs first *baseball* champion. The final was 2-0.
