(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) One of the Cardinals' most recognizable pitchers was nearly absent during a 2012 season that brought them to the brink of another World Series.

It looks as though that trend will continue.

Cardinals General manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny announced Tuesday Chris Carpenter will likely miss the upcoming season due to a nerve injury. Mozeliak gave speculation that the 39-year-old could have thrown his last pitch in the major leagues, but nothing is official.

"He's leaving the door slightly open, but it's unlikely," Mozeliak said.

Carpenter lays claim to a 144-94 record, a 3.76 ERA, and the 2005 Cy Young Award over a 15-year career. In 18 postseason starts, he's gone 10-4 with a 3.00 ERA en route to two World Championships in St. Louis.
