(EMPORIA, Ks.) As Tom Smith treks through his farewell tour in MIAA play, his team continues to search for answers on offense.

Those answers eluded them Sunday as Missouri Western fell 71-60 against Emporia.

After a respectable start, the Griffons (7-9, 3-5) poured in just 10 points over a near 15-minute span to finish off the first half. That put them in a 30-22 hole heading into the locker room.

On the contrary, the Hornets (7-7, 2-4) enjoyed a fruitful day offensively, shooting 56 percent from the floor and boasting four players in double figures.

Kalvin Balque scored a career-high 20 points for Western, while Cedric Clinkscales went for 16.

The Griffons are back at it Wednesday when they travel to Central Missouri.
