(EMPORIA, Ks.) On a rare Sunday of travel, late struggles ultimately doomed the Missouri Western Women.
The Griffons fell 62-55 against Emporia, snapping Western's three-game win streak and dropping the ladies to 12-4 and 5-3 in MIAA play.
Sharniece Lewis tried to neutralize Western's poor offensive outing as she caught fire down the stretch in the first half. She nailed four shots from beyond the arc to fuel a 14-point performance through the first 20 minutes and end up as the only Griffon in double figures.
Things flipped in the second half as she and Jacquitta Dever both drew technical fouls. The team managed to keep the game to a single-digit margin, but the Griffons shot just over 27 percent from the floor.
They also went 14-of-24 from the free throw line.
Four Hornets finished in double figures, led by Laura Patrick with 17 points.
