(MANHATTAN, Ks.) The No. 25 Wildcats had no plan other than to defend their new ranking on their home floor Saturday night.

The Roos didn't make it easy.

Kansas State had to battle a full 40 minutes for a 52-44 win against UMKC.

Rodney McGruder had 17 for the Wildcats (10-2), while Thomas Gipson added 13 on a night where the team shot just 32 percent overall.

Kansas State was without either of their top two point guards, Angel Rodriguez and Martavious Erving, who were both out with injuries.

Frank Chatmon led the UMKC (4-9) nine points and 16 rebounds.

The Wildcats finish non-conference play against South Dakota on Monday.
