(SAINT JOSEPH, Mo.) Central Girls head coach Kevin Kelley is a veteran on the sidelines of gymnasiums throughout this part of the country.

In his 11th year at Central, he knew he didn't want to wait long to hit a career milestone.

He got his wish Monday night in the Indians' second game of the year.

"
It's been a little longer than I would have liked," he said.

After a long offseason sitting on 499 career victories, Kelley broke through the barrier when his Central squad picked up a 58-22 win Monday.

"There's not a more deserving man on the planet. It's awesome that coach has gotten to this point," former player Robert Sigrist said.

It took 31 years and stints in Kansas and Missouri to hit the mark, but the coach has enjoyed all of his experiences in the profession.

"Seeing the variety of kids that you have, and seeing how hard they worked and the time that they put in," Kelley said. "I mean I've been very fortunate to have good assistant coaches, and to have good kids to work with."

But players have enjoyed having kelley man the bench just the same.

He's a good coach. He has his moments where he gets after us, but we know that he loves us in the end," guard Brady Rodney said.

He was also consistent at each stop along the way.

"No matter where coach has been whether it's been in Troy, whether it's been Savannah, whether it's been Central, it's been boys and girls, coach always wins," Sigrist said.

Even though the 500-win milestone goes down under Kelley's name, he says it's just as much his players' as it is his.

"They have worked hard. I didn't win a single ball game," he said."They were the ones that had to do the playing, so I'm excited for them too."
