Cameron Stays Loose Heading into the Class 3 Title Game

(COLUMBIA, Mo.) With one game left in the high school basketball season, many teams would feel the pressure of the game that awaits them.

That is not the case for the Cameron Lady Dragons.

A team that starts four sophomores and one junior is making sure that their stay in Columbia is an enjoyable one.

"These girls aren't taking this as a business trip," Cameron head coach Matt Wenck said. "They're having fun."

The Lady Dragons are just one win a way from claiming their first Class 3 State Championship, but they're staying loose.

"That's the way it should be," Wenck said. "They've got a charter bus, they've been out to eat at nice restaurants. They're having a good time. They've earned it, and that's what we want."

Cameron earned it through a 68-53 win semifinal win over St. James on Thursday.

Junior Ashli Lykins scored a career-high 29 points in the win.

That sets up the Dragons up against Lutheran (St. Peters) on Saturday at 1:20pm.

Wencks says Thursday's semifinal victory did a lot for his team's confidence, but they can't take their final contest of the season lightly.

"That was big to win that one last night, but once you get to this game, heck, you don't know if you're ever going to get back. There's a lot of good coaches, good teams, that have never been in this game that we're going to be in tomorrow. I don't take that for granted. I know that it could be short-lived. You don't know what happens next year or the year after that. So take advantage of it. We might as well win it while we're here."

The Lady Dragons will continue to enjoy the moment while it lasts.

And they hope it lasts until they come up with a first place trophy in hand.
