Reported by: Deanne Brink Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @10:53pm CST It was a night of celebration for St. Joseph's United Way.
This year's annual giving campaign came to an official end Thursday night. But, as the crowd laughed and cheered no one seemed to celebrate more than one young man who says his life has been forever changed this year by the gifts from United Way. Tommy Hoffman loves game shows. In fact, he can tell you just about anything you'd ever want or need to know about game shows. Tommy has some developmental challenges that led him to United Cerebral Palsy, a partner service with the United Way. Glynda King of UCP said, "Tommy has been coming to the adult program for many years. He's always had a dream of being a game show host and UCP has supported him in making that dream come true." A contribution from the Wheel of Fortune got the wheel rolling- so to speak. Glynda said at first it was just an idea. "At first we were like, Oh wouldn't be great if Tommy could go to California? We all just thought, yeah, that would be great but, that won't ever happen." The efforts of United Way, though were on Tommy's side. Tommy went to California and saw not only "Wheel of Fortune," but, "Price is Right, too!" He said the experience changed his life forever. But today, Tommy says the efforts of UCP and the United Way, are the real winning prize. The United Way raised $56,000 more than this year's goal. The charity received $3.376 million in campaign contributions. |
