  • St. Joe Proud: Steve Holdenried
    Reported by: Bob Cervera

    Monday, Oct 12, 2009 @06:28pm CDT

You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone with more passion about his community than a particular activist from St. Joseph's Mitchell Park area.

"I feel I have a calling. Y'know, there's a voice in me that tells me, 'Hey, you can do it,' so I do it," says Steve Holdenried.

    And do it, he does.

Spend any time outdoors where a face-lift is needed, around kids or the elderly or any political get-together and you're bound to run into Steve Holdenried.

He's not even a St. Joseph native.

"It's the way you're taught. Y'know, when you're in Cub Scouts, when you're in Boy Scouts, the church I belong to, the school I went to," Steve said. "Y'know, volunteerism I always something that I like to look forward to and it's something that just kind of rang my bell."

Growing up in St. Louis, retiring in Florida, where it was too hot, then moving close to family in St. Joseph, Steve says he learned how to live life from his grandfather.

"I'll never be one-tenth the person he was," He said. "He was a wonderful person, so I try to emulate my life to be like my grandfather."

One of Steve's co-workers, Josh Jensen defines Holdenried this way: "I can definitely see his passion for the community on a daily basis. He's probably the most fired-up about changing this city for the better-good."

Steve wants to pass his passion on to the kids who spend so much time with him.

"I empower them to take charge, to volunteer, to be involved in their community," he said.

His passion does run deep, saying, "I love St. Joseph. Y'know, the good part about St. Joseph is it's a fairly good-size town, but you can get involved and you can make a difference. All you have to do is speak up."

Although Steve's retired, he does get some income from a couple of jobs that pay for his volunteerism.
