  • Getting Greener: Gone to the Dogs

    Monday, Apr 20, 2009 @07:49pm CDT

Colleen Bachus is a dog lover.

But she knows pet ownership shouldn't be taken lightly.

That means picking up after her dog.

"Probably people are unaware of the millions of dogs that people own, especially in the larger cities. It's just part of being a responsible dog owner. You can just take it one step up to whenever you pick up your dog's waste to have that biodegradable bag."

Biodegradable waste bags are available at Colleen's store.

Some are made of plastic, and some are made of cornstarch.

The idea is to have them decompose more quickly in landfills.

When it comes to doggy doo bags, going green simply costs more.

    Here's how it works.

The faster the bag breaks down, the more expensive it is.

A hundred regular garbage bags will cost you about seven dollars.

For that same seven bucks you only get 60 biodegradable plastic bags.

    Cornstarch bags are even pricier.

    Fifty for ten dollars.

"Some norwegian companies and a couple American companies are working on poop bags that are right now extremely costly but available on the internet that can biodegrade at the rate of an apple."

While it may cost more, pet owners we spoke with say they're on board.

They say the cost is worth it.

"Totally create a mess for our environment and our environment's already in kind of bad shape, so I think it's a great idea. I really do," said Ravi Bhatia.

You don't have to shop around too hard for biodegradable bags.

    Most big chains have them.

Not picking up after your dog is just wrong.

Animal waste can pollute rivers and lakes and degrade water quality.
